Yobe: 24 shops burgled in Potiskum

About 24 shops were robbed in the early hours of Monday in Potiskum town, the commercial nerve centre of Yobe State.

Chairman of Potiskum Market Association, Abati Mohammed disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday in Damaturu, where he said 24 shops were burgled between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Monday with the robbers carting away the sum of one million, three hundred and eighty-two thousand naira (1,382,000.00).

The robbers, he said, took advantage of the curfew imposed by the Yobe State government between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, two days after the curfew time was reviewed from the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

It was gathered that the local security men employed to guard the market were not on duty when the incident occurred.

Reacting to the incident, the Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman in Yobe State, Lt. Lazarus Eli confirmed the report.

The JTF spokesman stated that five of the security men who were supposed to be on duty are currently in police custody for further investigation.
