Suspected child trafficker arrested in Kaduna

One Mallam Abubakar Adamu, who allegedly specializes in children trafficking is helping Kaduna State Police Command to unravel his business strategies.

He told journalists in Kaduna Monday how he stole two children, Nasirudeen Mahmoud (5 years) and Zainab Sultana Umar (5 years) and forcefully took them to his custody.

Mallam Abubakar Adamu, who lived in Ungwuwan Shekara, Malali District of Kaduna North local government area, claimed to be an importer of fabrics from Dubai.

He told journalists at the premises of Kaduna State Police Command that the first kid, Nasirudeen Mahmoud (m) whom he rechristened ‘Ibrahim’ was taken by him along Liberia road, Malali, while Zainab Sultana Umar (f) was taken on her way back from Islamic school a month ago along Jajere road, Badikko, Kaduna South local government area.

The suspect who has already obtained International Passports and Birth Certificates for the two kids said he intended to travel with them to Saudi Arabia before he was nabbed by the police.

He added that contrary to speculations, he did not have the intention to sell them off to the highest bidder.

“My wife, Fatima Abubakar, who is an Igbo woman, has been childless since our marriage; and whenever I see children, I get attracted to them especially when they are beautiful and intelligent.

“I have already spent more than $1,000 on them to buy toys for them and they are all registered at a private school in Malali.

“So, if I have the intention of selling them, I shouldn’t have bothered myself enrolling them into school. I want the best for them because I see them as my own children,” he explained.

When asked why he didn’t go to the Orphanage Homes to adopt a child, Mallam Abubakar said the pressure from family and friends was too much on him, so he cannot think in the right direction.

The wife of the suspect, Hajiya Fatima Abubakar, who is also in police custody disassociated herself from the whole scenario.

According to her, when her husband first brought in Nasirudeen to the house, “l asked him where he got the child from and he told me that he had adopted the child from an Orphanage home. The same thing he told me when he brought in Zainab Sultana about a month ago.

“As his wife, I have no option but to start taking care of the children. I was surprised when he came home with three international passports and informed me that very soon we will be traveling abroad.“

The resident of Mallam Abubakar Adamu is now under watch by the police as the youth in the area have threatened to set the property ablaze to vent their anger on him because of other children that have been missing and yet to be found.

Some of the youth said the life style of the suspect portrayed something dubious about him because nobody could ascertain the nature of his business.

However, Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai at the resident of one of the parents of kidnapped kids, Mallam Umar, who is a lecturer with the Kaduna Polytechnic, said everybody found wanting will be punished by the law.

At the resident of Nasirudeen Mahmoud, the governor was surprised when he asked what his name was, and the kid replied ‘Ibrahim’ the name given to him by Mallam Adamu.

The governor called on the residents to be vigilant on who is living within their community in order to forestall future occurrence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Aliyu Usman, said investigation was ongoing into the matter and that the suspects have all confessed to the crime while assuring that they would soon be charged to court.
