Anti-narcotics officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos state at the weekend arrested a 34-year-old South African woman, Lekganyane Lerato, for drug trafficking.
The drugs were reportedly detected by a female official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, during the passengers’ screening.
Lerato, in her attempt to board a Johannesburg-bound plane was found with the hard substance concealed in two packages and suspected to be cocaine hidden inside her bra.
The NDLEA commander at the airport, Ahmadu Garba told newsmen on Saturday that Lerato, an apprentice chef had attempted to smuggle 1.210kg cocaine from Nigeria to her home country.
“The suspect was intercepted during routine screening of passengers on South African airline. The drug was neatly concealed but certainly not good enough to escape our notice.
“She has been taken into custody and is currently under investigation and will be charged to court very soon.”
However, during her confession, the suspect revealed that she had been lured into drug trafficking by friends.
She said, “I never imagined that the drug would be detected because it was carefully concealed inside my bra.
“A female officer requested to feel my boobs and that was how the cocaine was detected.
“My travel expenses were handled by the sponsor who promised to pay me $3,000 when I get to Johannesburg but all my dreams have been dashed following my arrest,” she added.
