Seven staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service,FIRS, who were alleged to have forged Federal Government’s tax receipts to claim over N17 million from the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board,SUBEB, are to be arraigned by the Department of Public Prosecution in the Office of the Attorney General of Plateau State, following anorder by the North Central Zone of the Tax Appeal Tribunal sitting in Jos.
The forged Tax receipts were said to have been uncovered by the Tribunal when FIRS dragged SUBEB before the Tax Appeal Tribunal formevading tax.
The forged documents which were tendered by SUBEB before the court to substantiate their claim that they have remitted their tax made the court to begin to suspect some elements of fraud and subsequently ordered the Plateau State Police Command to investigate the forged documents.
Presenting its report during the sitting of the Tribunal in Jos on Tuesday, the Police Command said it has investigated the matter and discovered that the said documents were truly forged.
The State Police Commissioner, Chris Olakpe, whom Corporal Yahaya Adamu stood in for said, “the Command has arrested seven suspects in connection to the fraud and are in its custody awaiting order of the court for prosecution.
The Chairman of the Tribunal, Abraham Ndana Yisa, in his ruling over the matter, ordered the Plateau State Attorney General to ensure the suspects in police custody be arraigned for trial without delay.
Yisa commended the Plateau State Police Command for the investigation which he said had simplified the work of the Tribunal.
He also expressed delight over the professionalism of corporal Yahaya Adamu for getting to the root of the crime and recommended him for promotion.
