Robbers escaped with gunshot wounds in Onitsha

Armed robbers, in the early hours of Tuesday, unleashed terror on the commercial city of Onitsha, as  four persons, including two Mobile policemen on patrol were shot.

This came barely 24 hours after the Anambra State government inaugurated a N4 billion Security Trust Fund in the state capital, with two surveillance vehicle deployed to  Onitsha, to help beef up security during the fast approaching Yuletide.

It was gathered that though the two Mobile policemen attached to 54 Mobile Police Force MPF,  in Onitsha and a third victim did not die after being shot, they sustained gunshot wounds while a fourth victim, a taxi driver, allegedly lost his life.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said that robbery incident, which started around 7.45 a.m.  near Woliwo junction on Iweka Road, began when a four-man gang of armed robbers laid siege to a trader who they suspected was carrying an undisclosed amount of money but missed their target.

He further said that  the robbers, having missed their prime target, apparently became infuriated by the presence of the patrol vehicle of 54 PMF, making them to open fire on the policemen.

The source disclosed that policemen from the Central Police Station,  Onitsha led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Yusuf Ibrahim, promptly intervened and gave the hoodlums a hot chase.

The robbers were said to have escaped with gunshot wounds.
