The Police authorities in Delta State have launched a manhunt for unknown gunmen, who kidnapped a 75-year-old grandfather in Otu-Jeremi community, Ughelli South local government area of the state.
Security sources told DAILY POST Friday in Asaba that detectives had swung into action after the victim was forcefully abducted from his family home, last Wednesday.
Police Spokesperson, DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the development, said the command had stepped up efforts to rescue the old man and arrest his captors.
“Investigation is on and as I speak with you, we are on the trail of the kidnappers.
“We are appealing to members of the public with useful information to assist the police,” Kalu said.
However, family sources told DAILY POST that the kidnapping of the old man was currently brewing tension in the community.
It was gathered that the victim, whose name was not immediately available, was forced into his Toyota Camry car at gunpoint and driven away.
The family said his car was later recovered after it was abandoned along Obi Ayagha road, on the outskirt of the community.
A youth leader, Mr. Amos Ughorughe said that the youths had since mobilised themselves in an effort to assist the security agents in the rescue operation.
“We are determined to get to the root of this crime. The kidnapping of our old kinsman is totally unacceptable to us as youths.
“We have spread our intelligence dragnet to help track down the culprits. Otu-Jeremi must be free from criminality,” Ughorughe said.
