Two neighbours, Andrew Omokhafe and Seyi Ogunleye, who allegedly assaulted each other over a missing trouser, were arraigned on Wednesday in Lagos.
Omokhafe, 40, a trader and Ogunleye, 27, a driver, residents of Nos. 2 and 4, Ajegunle St., Ilupeju, Lagos are being tried for breach of the peace and assault, at an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 29 at their residence.
He said that the accused conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by engaging in a fight in a public place.
“The accused engaged in a physical fight by stabbing each other with bottles and knives.
“Their wives and children also joined in the fight; they stabbed one another with bottles, knives and iron rods, ” Olatunde said.
He said that Ogunleye accused Omokhafe of stealing his son’s jeans trouser from where he spread it on the clothes line but Omokhafe claimed that he was innocent.
“Omokhafe told Ogunleye that he did not take any trouser from the clothes line, except his own clothes on the line.
“The Ogunleyes went to the room of the Omokhafes, calling them thieves and that led to the fight between the two families,” the prosecutor said.
Olatunde said that if not for the quick intervention of the Police, the parties could have killed themselves.
He said the offences contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for convicted offenders.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and were granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 each, with one surety each in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, adjourned the case till June 26, for mention.(NAN)
