Police arraign man, 25, for alleged illegal possession of firearms

The Police in Akure on Thursday arraigned Ogunyemi Adeoye, 25, at an Akure Magistrates’ Court for alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions belonging to the police.

Police prosecutor, Cpl. Adeoye Adesegun, told the court that the accused was in unlawful possession of one AK 47 riffle with 78 rounds of live ammunition.

Adesegun alleged that the accused was found with one Mak pistol, No. 607015, with seven rounds of live ammunition, three AK 47 riffle magazines and 250 live cartridges.

The prosecutor said that the suspect failed to give satisfactory account of all the items found in his possession.

He alleged that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 11, 2012 at about 10 p.m. at Onipetesi Area in Ore, Ondo State.

According to him, the offence is punishable under the Criminal Code of Ondo State, 2006.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The counsel to the accused, Mr Akin Akingbule, urged the court to grant the accused bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs Florence Adesida, granted the application in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties.

Adesida said that one of sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 12 and submit two recent passport photographs, while the second surety must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

She adjourned the case to Sept. 26 for hearing. (NAN)
