Pastor docked for allegedly defrauding church member of N700,000

A pastor of a new generation church in Okokomaiko area of Lagos, Nwachukwu Onyedikachi, 27, was on Tuesday arraigned for allegedly defrauding a member of his church.

Onyedikachi is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The Prosecutor, Insp Innocent Uko, told the court that Onyedikachi allegedly defrauded one Mrs Esther Ariyo under the pretence of casting out demonic spirits in her.

Uko said the accused committed the offence on March 4, 2013 at No. 14, Ajakaiye St., Okokomaiko– by the Lagos-Badagry highway.

The Prosecutor said: “After the deliverance service was held, the complainant still felt the same way but the pastor had disappeared with the money.”

He noted that the offence contravened Section 312 and Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of obtaining by false pretence.

The defence counsel, Mr Idowu Sedgla, pleaded with the court to grant the accused bail because the offence was bailable.

He said the accused would cooperate with all the parties for an amicable resolution of the matter.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Etti adjourned the case to Feb. 25 for further hearing. (NAN)
