Oyo worshipper bags five months jail term for stealing in mosque

One Akeem Adeyemi, 31, was on Tuesday sentenced to five month imprisonment by an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State for stealing inside a mosque during prayers.

Adeyemi, on Monday pleaded guilty to two counts charge of felony and stealing inside a place of worship.

Testifying before the court, the prosecutor, Corporal Oluseye Oyebanji, said Adeyemi, on June 26, 2015, stole N7,000 from one Jubril Awalu.

According to the prosecutor, the convict entered the Bodija Housing Central Mosque, Ibadan with other worshipers, and removed the said money from one Awalu’s pocket.

Oyebanji noted that the offences were contrary to sections 390 (9) and 415 of the Criminal Code, Caps 38. Vol 11, Law of Oyo State, 2000.

The magistrate, Mrs. A.F. Richards, sentenced the convict to two months for committing felony and another three months for stealing.

She added that both sentences were to run concurrently, starting from the day Adeyemi was first arraigned before the court.
