Three men and a woman appeared on Wednesday in a Senior Magistrates’ Court
in Karu,FCt, for allegedly attempting to commit a criminal act known as “one chance”.
The accused persons are Obi Chinedu, Agu Pius, Maxwell Ugochukwu and Margaret Raphael, all of Gwagwa village, Abuja.
The accused are arraigned on two counts of criminal conspiracy and attempt to cheat.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Adokpa, told the court that they were arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps through a tip off from a victim of the crime.
Adokpa said they were arrested on the Airport Road Abuja, in a Toyota starlet car with Reg No. CB 323 ABC on March 3, in an attempt to carry out their act.
He said they posed as driver and passengers in the vehicle and stripped innocent Nigerians of their belongings.
Adokpa said that many innocent Nigerians had fallen victims to their dubious activities.
He said the accused confessed voluntarily at the station that they belonged to a syndicate that specialised in stealing
victims’ belongings.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravenes sections 96 and 95 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, they face seven years in prison each or with fine.
After the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs Jacinta Okeke, granted them bail for N200,000 and two reliable sureties each.
She ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below GL 07 and adjourned the case until May 7 for further hearing. (NAN)
