Ondo Prison guards shoot suspect over attempt to escape from court

There was disruption of court sitting yesterday at the Akure Magistrate Court as prison guards allegedly shot a suspect, who attempted to escape from the court.

The victim, whose identity was not disclosed by the Prison officials, was said to have been charged to court over an alleged contravention of government ban of commercial motorcycle operation, popular called Okada.

DAILY POST gathered that the suspect was granted bail by the Magistrate Court but could not perfect the condition of bail and attempted to escape as he was being escorted into the Prison Van to be conveyed to Olokuta Prison.

It was learnt further that the suspect after escaping from the premises of Magistrate Court located at Olokuyade House, Akure, ran towards Oshinle quarters, Akure.

This prompted the action of the security guards of the Nigerian Prison as they immediately started shooting sporadically, which made all the lawyers and the Magistrates in the court premises scamper for safety.

The accused person was later re-arrested by Prison security guards after a hot pursuit and brought back to the premises of the Magistrates Court.

An eyewitnesses disclosed that immediately the suspect was brought back to the premises of the court, another round of sporadic shooting by the prison guards started and in the process, the suspect was shot by the guards.

The suspect started rolling in the pool of his own blood and was hurriedly pushed into the Prison van and taken to Nigerian Prison at Olokuta, Akure.

Sources at the prison said the suspect has been taken into solitary confinement in the “Prison Guard room” as a punishment for attempting to escape. .
