Ondo Police arraigns couple over alleged impersonation of NAFDAC officials

A couple, Mr and Mrs Frederick and Ayobami Famiyesin have been dragged before an Akure Magistriate Court for impersonating officials of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control,NAFDAC.

In the charge preferred against them by the State Police Command, the couple are accused of defrauding the people of Okitipupa local government area of the state of millions of Naira, pretending to be officials of NAFDAC.

The couple who are between ages 42 and 52 have offered fake appointments to unsuspecting people in the council area and thereby committed offence contrary to the laws of the state.

The charge sheet read “that you Famiyesin Ayobami and Famiyesin Fredrick, sometimes in the month of October, 2012 at Okitipupa, in the Akure Magistrate District did conspire together to commit felony to wit, obtaining money under false pretence, thereby committed an offence punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code cap b36, vol 1 laws of Ondo state of Nigeria, 2006.

The duo were also accused of taking N200.000.00 and N1.million from Ogungbemi Damilola and Melehan Temidayo “with the promise that they will secure appointments for them at NAFDAC, an offence punishable under 419 of the criminal code cap 36, vol 1 laws of Ondo state of Nigeria.”

When the case came up for hearing today, the Police Prosecutor, Isah Atanegbe stood in for the police, while Mr B. Simeon represented NAFDAC. Messrs Jide Italoye and O. J Ikudaisi represented the accused.

Atanegbe told the court to issue bench warant against the couple and their sureties, because they were not present in court to answer the charges preferred against them.

However, the counsel to the defendants, Mr. Oladapo Ekundaisi told the court that the accused had fatal accident on their way to court and were receiving treatment in various hospitals in the state.

They pleaded with the court to give them a date within which they will produce the accused.

Although, the Police Prosecutor kicked against the application on the ground that there was no medical report to back the claim and that the sureties should show up to present the claims.

However the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Akin Akintoye has fixed August 21, for ,ordering the defendants’ counsel to produce medical reports of their clients.
