Ombatse massacre: Drama as female witness pulls ring before facing commission of inquiry

The Commission of Inquiry investigating the killing of scores of police and SSS personnel in Alakyio in May this year, yesterday witnessed a mild drama when two persons of Eggon extraction exchanged rings.

Some members of the audience had claimed that the ring had mystical powers, a reason the witness quickly took it off before questioning.

The woman, a Director of Primary Healthcare in Daddere Development Area of Obi Local Council, Felicia Ebbe Samuel, who appeared as a witness before the Commission, handed the ring to an unidentified man before entering the dock.

After leaving the witness box, she was seen collecting the ring, reportedly worn by members of the cult group.

The panelists led by retired Justice Joseph Gbadeyan, were however, oblivious of the development.

Mrs. Ebbe, a grade level 13 officer in the state civil service, denied knowledge of existence of Ombatse.

Although she admitted giving some health lectures to members of the groups, the witness claimed such were not interactive that would make her know their activities.

But the Alago people, who in recent times have been attacked by the dreaded group, had accused Ebbe as one of the sponsors of Ombatse.

As proceedings progressed, one of the panelists observed that Ebbe appeared in uniform, having earlier denied that she was not a member of any organisation.

She was dressed in a white blouse and yellow wrapper, same attire as a group of women also present. The dress is believed to be the uniform of the Ombatse group.

The panel was also stunned as the witness could not speak fluently during examination.

Queried about her educational status, Ebbe said she has a first degree in Environmental Health Science from Hougbegbo North American University in Cotonou, Benin Republic, a response that elicited disquiet within the hall.

Meanwhile, the Ombatse Chief Priest, Lega Agu, popularly called Baba Alakyio, for the third time shunned the Commission sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital.

The commission and the state government had assured that he would not be arrested after his appearance before the panel.
