THE Ika South Local Council, Delta State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has denied having a hand in the recent mayhem that rocked Agbor, headquarters of the council, leaving one person dead.
A statement by the Chairman, Comrade Amechi Igumbor described some reports in newspapers that linked the union to the crisis as false, unfounded, baseless and a figment of the writer’s imagination.
Igumbor said such stories were not only misleading, outright misrepresentation of facts but a calculated attempt to smear the image of the union. He insisted that due to the weighty nature of the allegation, it had become imperative to set the records straight for posterity.
Igumbor blamed the terror on rival cult groups in the area, insisting that jumping into uninformed conclusion and opinion that could not be substantiated by verifiable facts was a negation of the principle of fair hearing and justice, more so when police investigations on the matter were ongoing.
He lambasted one of the former chairmen of the union for instigating the rival cult groups in Agbor to foment trouble only to turn around and point accusing fingers at innocent persons.
According to Igumbor, the erstwhile executive that spent close to 10 years in office, was dissolved by the Delta State government following security reports that indicted the leadership.
He said the disbanded chairman had since then being engaging in blackmail and campaign of calumny against the leadership of the union to portray the union in bad light.
Igumbor, however, assured the people that in spite of the present development, the union would continue to be guided by its constitution particularly in the area of promoting peace and security.
