The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade, on Tuesday ordered an investigation into the arrest of two crew members of Arik Air in London, United Kingdom for alleged drug trafficking.
Spokesman for the agency, Mitchell Ofoyeju, in a statement in Lagos, confirmed that the airline crew members were arrested by officials of British Customs at Heathrow Airport, London, in connection with drug trafficking.
The statement noted that one of the crew members was found in possession of 6kg of cocaine, while the other was found with 60 packets of cigarettes.
“We have received a report of the arrest of some crew members of Arik Air. I have ordered a full scale investigation of the incident,”Giade said
He added that “Anyone found wanting shall be brought to book as no effort shall be spared in protecting the image of our country.”
The Arik Air flight took off from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday May 20.
Eight out of the 10 crew members that travelled in the flight had been cleared, while the remaining two were still being held in London.
Experts said it will be termed a national embarrassment if the crew members are found culpable of the crime.
