For killing his father on Christmas eve, a High Court sitting in Asaba had yesterday sentenced a 30-year-old farmer, Opukeme George to 20 years imprisonment.
Opukeme, a native of Tuomo in Bomadi local government area of Delta State, was found guilty of killing his father, Kosine George with a cutlass due to quarrel that ensued between them over some missing fish.
He told the court that he killed his father in self-defense as his father was the first to have launched an attack on him. He said that after his 2 pieces of fish could not be found in the house where he kept them, he pressed further, accusing his father who later attacked him, and out of provocation, he killed him with a knife.
A witness was called to prove the case while the convict spoke for himself.
Presiding Judge, Justice M.O. Omovie affirmed that “in the final analysis after reading the written submissions by both counsel, I hold that the accused is guilty of manslaughter. I hereby convict you for manslaughter.”
