Man remanded for strangling 2-month old baby

A Magistrate Court in Kano on Monday remanded a 32-year-old businessman, Kamal Rabiu, in prison for allegedly strangling a two-month old baby to death.

The accused was charged with culpable homicide.

Chief Magistrate Muhammad Idris ordered the remand of the accused following an application by the Police prosecutor, Insp. Badamasi Ya’u.

He said the accused should remain behind bar pending an advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Ya’u had told the court sitting in Normans land, that on Dec. 21 2015, the Commander of Hisba, Kano command, reported the case to the Commissioner of Police.

He said the accused of Goron Dutse Quarters Kano sometimes in Feb. 15, impregnated his female friend, Malama Kaltume Tijjani of Unguwa Uku Kano.

He said Kaltume gave birth to a baby boy named Muhammad Kamal.

Ya’u told the court that on Dec. 21, 2015, the accused went to Nasarawa Hospital to collect the two month old Kamal from Kaltume.

“In a struggle that ensued, Rabiu strangled the baby to death,’’ Ya’u said.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.

The Magistrate adjourned the case till Feb. 8, for further mention. (NAN)
