Man remanded for illegal possession of firearms


An 18-year-old John Emmanuel who was arrested for unlawful possession of firearm, was on Wednesday remanded by an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State.

Emmanuel, was arraigned on a two count charge of illegal possession of firearms and impersonation.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Rosemary Brown, while testifing before the court, Emmanuel committed the offences on March 28 at a police checkpoint in Ota.

Brown told the court that the suspect introduced himself as a police officer when he was found with two rounds of live ammunition without licence at a police check point.

Her words “The accused wore a police vest with the inscription Rapid Response Squad and introduced himself as a police officer, knowing that he is not,” she said.

She further noted that the offences contravened sections 3(1) and 109(b) of the Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Emmanuel, however pleaded not guilty and was consequently ordered by the Magistrate, Miss Temitope Adebutu, to be remanded in custody.

Adetutu further adjourned the case till June 8 for consideration of bail application.
