The Nigerian Navy on Thursday denied insinuations that one Lawal Alli, who was apprehended over his involvement in hijacking a truck loaded with goods worth N20m was a Naval Officer.

According to Commodore Kabiru Aliyu, Director, Naval Information, Alli who is now cooling his heels in police custody was never an officer of the Nigerian Navy.

Alli in his defence said he was enlisted into the Naval Force in 2006, but was dismissed in 2010 for abandoning his duty post.

However the Naval Director further cleared that the suspect had confessed during interrogation that he was not a Naval officer, adding that he got the Naval uniform from a merchant Navy with which he used in committing the crime.

According to the statement, the Navy has handed over Alli to officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja Lagos.

Aliyu said the Nigerian Navy decided to look into the case based on reports in the media that a Naval officer was among those who attacked trucks carrying goods worth N20m.

He further warned that anybody caught using Naval uniforms to perpetrate evil will be prosecuted.
