Man bags three-year jail term, hard labour for rape

An Ebonyi State High Court sitting in Abakaliki on Wednesday sentenced a middle-aged man, Ekene Nweke, to three years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 20-year-old girl.

The State Chief Judge, Justice Alloy Nwankwo, sentenced the Ekene for defiling one Miss Blessing on Feb. 21, 2011.

According to the Prosecutor, Mrs Nkem Chukwu, Nweke had on February 21, 2011 raped Blessing at her residence in Abakaliki.

The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to section 358 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State.

Chukwu, in his argument provided a report of the medical examination carried out on the victim, showing deposit of semen around her private part.

While delivering judgement, Justice Nwankwo said evidence before him shows that Nweke committed the act and as such must be punished.
