A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital has sentenced a man, Taye Isaac to six months imprisonment with hard labour for escaping from police cell where he was detained.

The court presided over by Mr Sunday Adedapo, however, gave an option of N20,000 fine to the convict.

Isaac, who was arrested by men of the state Police Command for breaking a bottle on one Sunday Akinola during a quarrel that ensued between them, escaped from Police cell while in detention.

The accused person was said to have escaped from the police detention in the middle of the night.

However, he was later rearrested and charged to court.

According to the prosecution, the accused person committed the offence in Ondo Magisterial District on November 4, 2015.

The offence committed was said to be contrary to and punishable under section 135(a) of the Criminal Code Vol. 37 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006 .

The prosecutor, Mr Pelumi Adejuwon asked the court for adjournment to enable him present all necessary evidence before it .

Isaac pleaded guilty to the offence while the police prosecutor tendered his (accused person) statement to the court as an exhibit, which was read to him and he confirmed it.

Counsel to the accused person, Mrs Grace Obanigba appealed to the court to be lenient in its verdict, saying Isaac had confessed to the offence and did not waste the court’s time.
