A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced one Monday David to seven months in prison for assaulting a female colleague and destroying her jewellery worth N25, 000.

Judge Hassan Ishaq, however, gave David the option of paying a fine of N 10, 000, with a warning to always exercise self-control.

He also ordered him to pay the complainant N 20, 000 in compensation, and to write an undertaking with the court’s registry to be of good behaviour.

The prosecutor, Insp. Phillip Akogwu, had earlier told the court that a co-worker of the accused, Ojeluwa Adesuwa, of New Nation, Asokoro, Abuja, reported the matter at the Asokoro Police Station on June 26.

Akogwu told the court that the accused attacked Adesuwa after an argument, adding that pleas by other colleagues for David to stop fighting the complainant fell on deaf ears.

According to the prosecutor, the accused also destroyed the gold jewellery, valued at N25, 000, the complainant was wearing during the brawl. (NAN)
