Man arraigned for giving false information to police in Enugu

A 37-year-old man, Okwudili Agah has been arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Enugu South Local Government for allegedly giving false information to the police.

The suspect, who was docked on a one-count charge was said to have raised a false alarm of a robbery incident, a situation that led to the arrest and detention of some residents.

The prosecutor, Nna Nna Michael told the court that Okwudili Agah had “on the 16th day of April, 2013 at Police Command Headquarters Enugu in the Enugu South Magisterial District did give CPL Patrick Aniera, a person employed in the public service to wit the Nigeria Police Force information, which you know or believe to be false by stating in a petition to the Commissioner of Police State State Headquarters, Enugu dated 16th April 2013 written by one Chukwudi Nwankwo Esq on your behalf, which was signed to CPL Patrick Aniera to investigate that Mr. Afamefuna Ugwu and his other gang robbed you and one Chijioke Agbo of your belongings”.

He added that the suspect gave such false information “with the intention of causing the said police officer to exercise his lawful powers to the injury or annoyance of Mr. Afamefuna Ugwu and Chinedu Ani by arresting and detaining them, acts which the said police officer ought not to have done if the true facts concerning the information given to him and thereby committed an offence punishable by section 154 (b) of the Criminal Code cap.30, Vol.II Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

In another charge which also came before the court, Okwudili was accused to have conspired with others now at large “to commit felony to wit forgery and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 495 (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria”.

The second count read “that you Okwudili Agah, did forge a survey plan NO. SK/EN.162/2007 showing Umuogoli/Umunshi Obodo family land which you presented to unsuspecting members of the public”.

After the charges were read to the suspect, he pleaded not guilty and the court presided over by Mrs. Obi Eze granted him bail with the sum of N100,000, with one surety who must present three years of tax clearance.

The case has been adjourned to January 28 for hearing.
