A 45-year-old man, John Ekundayo, on Monday appeared before an Ibadan Magistrates’ Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan for abandoning a corpse in his apartment.
Ekundayo who was arraigned on a-one-count charge numbered MI/323c/2017, was accused of improper or indecent interference with the dignity of the deceased by abandoning her in a room instead of burying the corpse.
The prosecutor, Inspector Ogunremi Sunday told the court that the accused committed the crime on 28th of February 2017, at about 0630hrs at NW2/403 Okebiyi compound Idi-Kan, Ibadan.
He said the offence contravenes sections 242(1)(b) Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
Ogunremi said, “The accused did improperly or indecently interfer with or offer indignity to the dead human body of one Mrs. Bukola Alabede by abandoning her in your room apartment without lawful justification or excuse of deceased relatives and thereby committed an offence contrary to punishable under section sections 242(1)(b) Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.”
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. F. Richard then granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The judge,however, said that one of the sureties must be the accused’s blood relation and must be in possession of a National Identificaty Card (National ID card), and the second surety should be at least a level nine (9) officer in the civil service.
She then adjourned the case till April 19, 2017 for further hearing.
