‘Madman’ charged with stealing mobile phone worth N16,000

A fake madman, Kunle Olubajo, on Tuesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos charged with the theft of a mobile phone valued at N16,000.

Olubajo, 33, of no fixed address is facing a charge of stealing but pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Gbenga Salami, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 24, at No. 58 Ibukun St., Surulere, Lagos.

Salami said that the accused, who pretended to be a mentally unbalanced person, approached Mrs Florence Uzoechi, a tailor, in her shop and asked for a thread.

The prosecutor said that the request was rebuffed and Olubajo was chased away only for Uzoechi to discover later that her phone on the sewing machine was missing.

He said that when the complainant raised an alarm and the supposed madman pursued and apprehended, the phone was found in his possession.

Salami said that the mobile phone, a Nokia 310 Asha was worth N16, 000.

He said that the offence committed contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for anyone convicted of stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs F.B. Lawal granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case to May 19 for mention. (NAN)
