Lawyer calls for arrest of ‘Operation Burst’ soldier who allegedly raped Poly student in

The female student of Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oyo State, who was allegedly raped by a soldier attached to the state security outfit, ‘Operation Burst’, has demanded justice.

Counsel to the victim, Barrister Ola Adeosun while addressing newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, called for the arrest, thorough investigation and prosecution of the randy soldier.

The victim, an ND student, was raped by the randy soldier at about 10 pm on Friday, 29 August, while returning to her department at Oke Ola area, Eruwa.

Adeosun called for a campaign for the handing over of the randy soldier to men of the Nigeria Police by the Nigerian Army headquarters for proper prosecution in a civil court for the offence of “rape”.

He demanded that the federal government and the Nigerian Army headquarters conclude internal formalities on the randy soldier for proper prosecution and rehabilitation of the victim.

Noting that it was difficult to demand the disbandment of ‘Operation Burst’, the lawyer called on the state government to restructure the security outfit.

He also demanded that the present crop of officers in the security outfit be changed, saying that they should be redeployed and officers who are truly professional brought in after serious reorientation on how not to be used by politicians to harass citizens.

Adeosun urged the state government to commence real renovation and provision of basic equipment in public hospitals, saying that it was embarrassing that government-owned hospitals do not have the facility to carry out tests on rape victims.

He disclosed that since the incident, the victim had taken to alcohol as a means of trying to forget the incident and that on September 3, out of frustration, the victim made an attempt to poison herself because of agony and stigma she was being subjected to.
