Lagos court grants man N5m bail for raping 6-year-old girl

A 32-year-old man, Abeng Oji was on Wednesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court in Lagos State for allegedly defiling a 6-year-old girl.

The prosecutor, Insp. Feddy Asu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 30, at 06:00 a.m, at the Ologolo community in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state.

He said the accused, a horticulturist, who worked as an apprentice with the victim’s father, had access to the house of his victim where he unlawfully had a carnal knowledge of the minor.

“The accused had a carnal knowledge of the girl when he knew that her parents had gone out,” the prosecutor said, adding that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 137 provides life imprisonment for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, W. B. Balogun granted the accused bail in the sum of N5 million, ordering that he produce two sureties, who must own properties, supported with genuine Certificates of occupancy (C of O).

Balogun said that such properties must be within the jurisdiction of the court.

He adjourned the case to April 13 for mention, ordering that the case file be duplicated and sent to the office of Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for legal advice. .
