There was pandemonium in Ugbolu community in Asaba, Delta State as robbers after disposing residents of their belongings attacked a patrol van and killed four policemen in the process.
The hoodlums were said to have opened fire on the police patrol van on sighting them along the Asaba-Ugbolu Expressway, killing four while others sustained varied degrees of injury.
It was learnt that the police also responded with firepower , injuring four of the six-man gang.
According to a resident, “The armed robbers had just robbed residents of the community, and were on their way home when the police patrol team ran into them. They opened fire on the policemen, who equally returned the firepower. But four policemen died.”
The State Police Commissioner, Alkali Usman however stated that only one policeman was killed, saying that the other officers who sustained fatal injuries were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, for medical treatment.
Usman assured residents of the state of adequate security, adding that the police is working towards apprehending the fleeing robbers.
