The Nigeria police, on Sunday, gunned down four young men suspected to be armed robbers in Enugu.

It was gathered that the robbers were killed during a shoot out with a combined team of police and soldiers at Ugbene road, Abakpa Nike, a suburb of Enugu at about 4.pm.

According to an eye-witness, the security operatives in a patrol van tracked down the robbers who operated in a Mercedes Benz car, which they had allegedly snatched earlier from a lady at Trans-Ekulu suburb.

“At that point, an exchange of gunfire ensued, during which the car conveying the robbers veered off the road and crashed into a building after its tyres were punctured by police bullets.

“The police went after the robbers on receiving report from the lady whose car was snatched.

“But, on sighting the police patrol van, the robbers engaged the policemen in a shoot-out, during which four of them were shot dead”, the source added.

He said the sound of gunshots caused commotion in the area as people scampered for safety to avoid being caught in the cross fire.

The security operatives were said to have removed the bodies of the slain robbers from the scene immediately. Police spokesman in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident.
