The Enugu State Police Command says not less than 22 kidnappers have been arrested by its operatives from different divisions in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, who announced this on Sunday, said the suspects were apprehended between the months of April and July 2013.
The Police Chief was giving update on the kidnap of a Lebanese Mohammed Kanaan, attached to Grey Line Construction Company Udi/Ugwuoba Road Enugu, on April 29.
He stated that the anti-kidnapping unit rescued the victim unhurt on 2nd May, and vowed to urgently conclude investigations into all the criminal cases being handled by the command.
He added that one Albert Chukwu, alias Agbaranze, who claimed he hailed from Ugwuoba was tracked and picked in connection with the incident and that he was assisting the operatives in their investigations.
In another development, One Fidelia Obetta was equally rescued from kidnappers at Nsukka, leading to the arrest of four suspects- Chibueze Areji, Ikowo Ekene, Eze Ikechukwu and Ezema Okechukwu, adding that two locally made guns with live cartrigdes were recovered from the hoodlums.
Also, following the alleged kidnap of one Ijeoma Maduabuchi on 20/4/13, and who is believed to have been murdered by her abductors at Obinagu village, Ugwuoba in Oji-River Local Government Area of the state, seven persons were tracked down and arrested.
The suspects include Sunday Nwangwu, Raymond Nwambe, Uzoamaka Ogadi(F), Ekene Eze alias Mmachi, Chinonso Ikeanyi, Omah James and Nnaemeka Enyi.
According to the CP, two locally made guns were recovered from them.
Adamu also revealed that one Regina Eke of about 60 years, who was abducted by three armed men on 22/6/13 at her residence in Isiugwu Enugu Ezike in Igbo Eze North Local Government of the state was rescued unhurt.
He said the manhunt launched by the police led to the arrest of four suspects- Uchenna Azegba alias terminator, Onyema Apeh alias KPEKPE, Ikechukwu Ugwu alias DEADBODY, and Chinedu Ali.
Three locally made guns, live cartridges and 15 expended Ak 47 ammunitions were recovered from them.
The commissioner further revealed that following the reported kidnap of one Ozor John Chukwu on 3/7/13 from his compound at Amankpuma Oduma Aninri by about six armed men, his anti-kidnapping squad swung into action which led to a serious gun duel between them and the hoodlums at Akpugo.
He said those arrested in connection with the incident include Victor Godwin,Titus Ani, Adamu Musa, Ikechukwu Ogbonna,Titus Eze, and Onyebuchi Offor, adding that one locally made short gun, two lives cartridges, one axe and one toyota Hiace Bus with registration NO RBC 674 XC Belonging to a Local Government mass transit company were recovered from the gang.
Adamu observed that his command had recorded succeses in other areas such as the recent arrest and prosecution of three persons apprehended for school certificate racketeering and some suspects also involved in child trafficking business also known as “Baby Factory”.
While assuring of the commitment of his command towards fighting crime in the state, he, however, called on the members of the public to always partner with the police through their timely and useful information.
