Enugu Police arrests 164 criminal suspects

The Enugu State Police Command says it arrested 164 criminal suspects (one hundred and sixty four) between January and December 2013.

The Commissioner of police in the state, Adamu Abubakar Mohammed, who stated this through a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu gave the breakdown as follows: 92 armed robbery suspects, 30 kidnap suspects, 11 suspected cultists, 15 car snatching suspects, 13 vandals and 3 stealing suspects.

He also disclosed that a total number of 39 arms and 51 ammunitions were recovered while 7 kidnapped victims were rescued without payment of any ransom, adding that a total number of 18 vehicles were recovered.

Adamu maintained that the above figure when compared with that of 2012, showed a drastic reduction in crime rate in the state.

“From the record, there is drastic reduction of crime in the year 2013 as most crime that would have occurred were promptly prevented in line with the tenet of proactive policing strategies which the command believed in”, he stated and assured that the year 2014 would witness a more better record.

According to him, “in the year 2012, the command arrested a total number of three hundred and fifty one suspects under the following cases- Armed Robbery-188, kidnapping-91, cult activities-37, car snatching-20, vandalization-6 and burglary and stealing-9.

“Also in 2012 a total number of 90 arms and 417 ammunition were recovered, while a total number of 11 kidnap victims were rescued. In the area of car theft/snatching, a total number of 115 vehicles were recovered”.

Adamu further stated that “members of the public were positively sensitized on the need to be security conscious about their environment and properties and be able to report promptly to the command through the designated numbers on information about crime and criminality, and the command’s security operatives were always on hand to attend to any distress calls within the shortest possible time”.

He lauded the strong partnership between the state command and sister security agencies, the government and good the people of the state as well as other relevant stake holders, which according to him had contributed in making the state safe and secured.

He assured that in 2014, that all the newly created divisions across the state would have functional Police Community Relations Committee members to help bridge the gap between the police and the public.

Adamu thanked the leadership of the Nigerian Police under the Inspector General of Police, IGP M.D Abubakar and his management team for their fatherly support to the command.

He equally commended the media in the state for their support and assistance in the area of vigorous sensitization, enlightenment and partnering role with the police.

The commissioner also thanked his officers and men, who according to him were very much committed throughout the year.
