A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year- old woman, Maryam Babangida, to one year in prison for abducting a two-month-old baby.

Babangida, who resides at Sabon Angwar, Agaye, Niger State, was charged with one count charge of abduction.

The Chief Magistrate, Ms Joyce Kaka, sentenced Babangida after she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Kaka did not give the convict an option of fine.

“The court sentences you to one year in prison without an option of fine.

“The convict admitted to all the elements of kidnapping under Section 273 of the Penal Code as alleged against her,” she said.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr Williams Luka, told the court that the convict abducted a two month old baby.

According to him, the baby was abducted while he was with his biological mother, Mrs Marwa Adamu, of Sabon Layi, Maraban-Jos, Kaduna State.

Luka said the accused abducted the baby when she went to plait her hair in Adamu’s house.

He said that the convict kept the bay with her for 16 days.

Luka said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 273 of the Penal Code.

In her plea, the convict begged for mercy saying:’ I took the two-month-old baby from his mother in Kaduna.

“I was not planning to do any harm on the baby. I just liked the baby.

“All through the time the baby was with me, I fed him with custard and milk for the 16 days before the police arrested me,” she said. (NAN)
