An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Iyaganku has ordered a petty trader, Busurat Ademola, 45, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly stealing a 40-day-old baby in Ibadan.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olusola Adetujoye, ordered Ademola’s remand in Agodi Prison pending receipt of legal advice from the state Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the plea of the accused person was not taken.

The prosecutor, Insp Ade Adebusuyi, alleged that the accused entered a house and stole a 40-day-old baby while asleep in a bedroom.

He said the baby’s mother was washing the child’s clothes at the backyard when she saw Ademola leaving the house with her child.

The prosecutor said the child’s mother raised the alarm and the woman was apprehended.

He said when the accused was asked about her mission in the house she said she was looking for room to let.

The prosecutor said that the offence was committed on April 8 at about 10 a.m., at Agric area of Olomi in Ibadan.

Adebusuyi said the offence contravened Section 371 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case untill April 30 for mention. (NAN)
