Hell was let loose yesterday in Ekiti State as irate mob, believed to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) assaulted and beat up an official of the Directorate of State Security (DSS).
Eyewitnesses report that trouble started following a disagreement between students of the Ekiti State University, (EKSU) and commercial drivers over number of passengers that should occupy a seat.
The clash between the students and the commercial drivers, also known as Akoto drivers in Ekiti, which took place in Bawa Area of the State capital, later degenerated into a free-for-all causing traffic gridlock from Bawa to the University area .
The situation worsened into violence as an official of the Directorate of State Security (DSS), whose name was given as Courage purportedly got attacked and was ruthlessly beaten by some drivers.
Narrating his ordeal to newsmen, the DSS official said he was attacked on his way to the office by some of the drivers who were molesting other motorists. He said that when he introduced himself as an officer of the DSS, rather than accord him a free passage, the angry drivers attacked him and tried to dispossess him of his pistol.
