The Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency; NDLEA, said it has arrested100 suspects and impounded 617.832kg of Cannabis, (Indian hemp) from January to June, 2013.
Mr. Parah Julius, who is the State Commander of the Agency, disclosed this on Wednesday during the celebration of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with the theme, “New Psychoactive Substances”.
According to him, apart from the exhibits seized from the suspects, the Command rehabilitated 43 drug users during the year under review while 49 of them were discharged and reintegrated back into the society even as 35 drug offenders are currently undergoing different stages of counselling and rehabilitation.
He further explained that, “By this time last year, during the UN programme, the agency also seized 341.2kg of deadly drugs and in the period under review, five vehicles used for conveying drugs, which include two Volkswagen Golf, one Toyota Avalon, Nissan Primera and Peugeot 406 Saloon car, were seized”.
Adding that, some of the new psychoactive substances that drug user have already invented in order to achieve the same effect of conventional drugs are tramadol, cough syrup with codeine, rubber solution, gasoline, suck and die, tippex, monkey tail and sniffing of pit toilet.
The NDLEA boss while calling for a legislation to regulate the usage of new psychoactive substances by youth, urged regulatory bodies to review socially acceptable drugs in order to reduce addiction and violent behavioural patterns among youth.
