Battered Lover Slams N20m Suit On NNPC Official

A businesswoman, Miss Jennifer Broderick, has filed a N20 million suit before an Ikeja High Court in Lagos against her lover, Mr. Etim Eyo Effanga, an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

In the suit filed by her counsel, Umoru Abdullahi of Gerald Associates, Jennifer claimed that sometime in May 2011, Effanga drove her in his car to a hotel on Awolowo Road, Ikeja, Lagos, where they relaxed and had conjugal affairs.

The claimant said the relationship went sour when a quarrel ensued as she requested for financial assistance because she was carrying the defendant’s baby.

Jennifer said she was assaulted several times, hit with clenched fist blows, stripped naked and degraded.

In the process, she said she sustained injuries, lost her pregnancy, properties and jewellery worth N250,000.

According to her statement of claim, the claimant’s solicitors made futile efforts at reconciliation but the defendant failed to cooperate with them.

She therefore prayed the court for a declaration that the unjust, undignified battery and assault was a violation of her dignity and womanhood, while seeking the award of the sum of N20 million against the defendant as aggravated and exemplary damages for all she lost as a result of the attack by the defendant.

Jennifer, who resides at 100, Ibidun Street, Surulere, Lagos, supported her statement of claim with a 14-paragraph written statement on oath.

Although the matter was filed as suit number ID/1259/2011 on 17 November, 2011, no date has yet been fixed for its hearing.
