The Ondo State police command, on Tuesday, admitted that the three persons arrested two weeks ago, following the armed robbery attack on Diamond Bank Plc in Akure, were arested in error.
The command said the people were not armed robbers and had since been released.
The commissioner of police, Mr Sani Magaji, who said this in Akure, however, said a member of the gang that robbed the bank had been arrested.
He said the suspect, who was nursing some wounds, was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state capital.
He said the people that were arrested in error were discovered to be business- men but were kept in police custody to enable proper investigation to be conducted
Magaji said: “We carried out an extensive investigation after the three persons were arrested. We ascertained their identities and we discovered that they were victims of circumstances. They ran into the confusion but they were lucky to have escaped any form of mob action.
“Investigations showed that they are contractors on their way to Abuja from Lagos. We found on them a letter that indicated they were actually on a business trip,” he added.
The police commissioner, however, said frantic efforts were being made to ensure the scurity of life and property of the people just as the state government had procured five armoured personnel carriers for the command to aid effective crime prevention and control.
He said: “Apart from the five APC donated by the state government, the command has been allocated two others by the Force headquarters. The era of robbery is gone in Ondo. Even before the use of APC we have been helping other commands to arrest robbers.”
