61-year-old driver arraigned for knocking down two policemen in Ogun

A 61-year-old driver, Omoyele James, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State for allegedly knocking down two policemen.

James is standing trial for manslaughter and reckless driving.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha, while testifying in court, said the suspect drove his vehicle recklessly and in the process killed two policemen, Cpl. Asafa Kamorudeen,30, and Cpl. Rotimi Ipinse,30 .

According to Mustapha, the suspect committed the offence on May 15 at about 12.20 p.m. at Oke-Ore Village, Atan near Ota.

“The accused drove a pickup with registration no. BDG 838 XP (Lagos) dangerously and killed the policemen”, he told the court.

He said the offences contravened Sections 5, 6 (1), 17 and 18 of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation, 2006.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Abimbola, granted James bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She stated that one of the sureties must own a developed landed property within the court’s jurisdiction, adding that evidence of one year tax payment should be submitted with recent passport photographs to the court.

The case was adjourned to Aug. 7 for hearing.
