A 60-year-old woman, Helene Alabi, was on Monday arraigned before an Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly aiding the escape of her son, Emmanuel Alabi, from detention and trial.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Foluke Adedosu, said that the defendant was arraigned on a one-count charge of perversion of the course of justice.

She said, Alabi committed the offence on July 12, 2012, at about 1.50 p.m. at Mapo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan.

The prosecutor said the defendant had stood as surety for her son, Emmanuel, who was arraigned for theft.

Adedosu said that the arrest of Alabi was inevitable because of the disappearance of her son.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened section 126 (2) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria, 2000.

Alabi’s plea for more time to bring her son to court was not granted by the court.

Chief Magistrate, Adams Adeshina, however, admitted her to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the matter to Aug. 1 for further hearing.
