60-year-old woman arraigned over N2.8 million fraud

A 60-year-old land speculator, Rasaki Shakoto, who allegedly obtained N2.8 million from a businessman under the guise of selling land to him appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday.

Shakoto, whose residential address was not given, is standing trial on a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Haruna, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offences sometime in June 2013, at the Iworo area of Badagry, Lagos.

He said that the accused obtained the sum of N2.8 million from one Otunba Williams Kuye, on the pretext of selling two acres of land to him.

Haruna said, “the accused knew that the representation he made to Kuye was false”.

The prosecutor, however, said that the accused stole the said money, adding that actions of the accused was likely to cause a breach of the peace.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 166 (d), 285 and 312 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him by the police.

The Magistrate, Mr Martins Owumi, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
