40 persons arrested for various offences in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, yesterday said the command has apprehended no fewer than 40 people for different offences across the state.

He disclosed this during a chat with pressmen in Ado Ekiti.

The Commissioner said among those apprended were those that escaped from the Federal Prison, Ado Ekiti, last year December 1, when the penitentiary came under siege by gunmen.

According to the Commissioner, “We have close to 40 suspects in our cells. We are being hindered to charge them to court because of the judiciary workers’ strike. Most of those arrested are among those that escaped from prison.”

He said the police was capable of ensuring that the country is secured during and after the elections, stating that the deployment of the military to assist the police force was a welcome development.

“Nigeria police is in charge of internal security. It is stated in the constitution that the military can assist and we also, under Section 4 of the Police Act can assist the military.

“There is nothing wrong in the military assisting us once in a while. It doesn’t mean that we are failing in our duties. Incident sometimes can be overwhelming. We work hand-in-hand but 90 per cent of the job is done by the police, they only support,” he said.

The Police boss also disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Efon Alaaye had been changed as a result of inadequacy he showed during an attack on Chief Joseph Alake, a political leader of the All Progressives Congress.

Accoring to Lakanu, those in possession of firearms that were apprehended will be charged to court.
