A 33-year-old auto mechanic, Sulaimon Ayinde, who allegedly assaulted a policeman, Sgt. Iyibo Orimisan, was on Thursday charged before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused, who resides at No. 4B, Fatigun St., Apapa Road, is being tried for assault, unlawful obstruction, conspiracy and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Onaiwu Iyobosa, said the accused committed the offences on Sept. 18 at 4.30 p.m. at Freeman by Willoughby Street, Ebute Meta.

She alleged that the accused with some men still at large assaulted the policeman while trying to arrest some men, who were smoking Indian hemp.

“Ayinde and his boys attacked the policeman with broken bottles and also gave him several blows on the face.

“The accused and the others also tore his trousers,’’ Iyobosa told the court.

Iyobosa noted that the offences contravened Sections 166(d), 172(b) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 (b) prescribes a three-year imprisonment for felons.

Ayinde pleaded innocence of the offences.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr K. O. Ogundare, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum.

In addition to the bail conditions, the surety should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government, he said.

The case has been adjourned to Oct. 9 for mention. (NAN)
