Zidane reveals he never wanted to coach

Zinedine Zidane has insisted that he never planned to become a coach.

The former France international spent last season as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Real Madrid, but is now in charge of the club’s B team this season. Before all of that, Zidane was the sporting director at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“There are people who obsess about becoming a coach but back in 2006 I really didn’t want to be a coach,” he told L’Equipe.

“After I finished playing I tried several different experiences, as sporting director at Madrid, but I still couldn’t find out what it was I really wanted to do.

“But in the end I realised, I wanted to coach.”

When the 42-year-old was asked why he decided to take charge of Madrid’s Castilla rather than the first team, he replied: “I’m in the same situation as when I started playing football. I’m learning. I need to learn. Many experts have asked me why, but I don’t listen to anyone else, I do what I feel.”
