Zidane equals Ancelotti’s 31-match unbeaten mark with Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane has equaled Carlo Ancelotti’s 31-game unbeaten run, after Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the hosts two goals up with a penalty and a diving header, before Carlos Carmona pulled one back for the relegation-threatened club.

There were no goals in the second half, as it rained heavily at the Bernabeu and Sporting missed a penalty late in the match.

Madrid remain top of La Liga and have been undefeated in all competitions for six months.

The last time Zidane’s men lost a game, was a 2-0 defeat to Wolfsburg in the Champions League on April 6, 2016. Since then, they have recorded 23 victories and eight draws in all competitions, scoring 86 goals and conceding just 28.

Under Ancelotti with Zidane as his assistant, Madrid put together 26 wins and five draws during the 2013-14 campaign, with the team scoring 87 goals and conceding 20. That run was ended by defeat in Clasico to Barcelona.

Madrid host third-tier La Cultural Leonesa at the Bernabeu on Wednesday evening in a Copa del Rey last 32 second leg, before they travel to Camp Nou next weekend.

The Bernabeu outfit’s club record of unbeaten games is 34.
