Yuletide: Police arrest 124 suspected cultists, punish 28 officers in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command on Saturday said it had arrested 124 persons suspected to be cultists from different parts of the state.

Spokesman of the command, SP Haruna Mohammed, said the arrests were made during a raid on criminal hideouts and black spots and that 37 of the suspects had confessed and were charged to court.

53 of the suspects he said were screened and released while 34 others were undergoing interrogation.

“The state Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, had ordered aggressive raids on criminal hideouts and black spots in the state to ensure people of the state, both at home and in the diaspora, celebrate Christmas and New Year without hindrance or molestation.

“The State Command through its Special Anti Cultism Squad/FSARS and Divisional Police headquarters arrested total number of 124 suspected cultists/hoodlums from various parts of the state,” he said.

He said four locally made pistols, six cutlasses, two axes, about 1000 wraps of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and two regalias for Aye and Junior Vickings Confraternities were recovered from the suspects.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 28 police officers who committed different offences in the course of their duty have received varying degrees of sanctions.

Mohammed who disclosed this said, “So far, the command has sanctioned over 28 personnel for various disciplinary offences, and punishment ranging from dismissal from the Force, reduction in ranks and in some cases prosecution of erring officers was meted out on defaulters.

“It is also on record that the present leadership of the command under the CP Garba Baba Umar has zero tolerance on corruption and professional misconduct hence the creation of a special unit called Anambra State Police Public Complaint Unit, which is saddled with investigating professional misconduct such as extortion, incivility to members of the public and excessive use of force among others.

“This is in addition to other outfits such as IGP X Squad and CP monitoring unit,” he stated.
