The Nigeria Police has advised Nigerians to be vigilant while receiving gifts from unknown persons who may pose as friends during the yuletide, and in view of current security challenges.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, said in a statement issued by the force spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu on Wednesday, that this was to avoid receiving “explosive-laden hampers as gifts’’.

Abba, therefore, cautioned against the use of fireworks and other explosives during the period as they could cause distraction that might further heighten fear of insecurity.

He advised the citizens to shun all forms of violence and unlawful acts, eschew bitterness, hatred and rancour, “and go about their legitimate duties without fear of intimidation during and after the season.’’

Meanwhile, Abba has directed Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police in all the states to take necessary measures to provide adequate security throughout the period.

He specifically directed commissioners of police to take measures to ensure security at all “key and vulnerable points’’ including places of worship, worshipers, travelers, highways, financial institution, motor parks and public resorts.
