The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a truck driver whose truck was set ablaze by irate mob over claims that he crushed three persons to death in Osholo village of Etsako East Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred when the driver, who was en route Weppa from Ekperi, ran into guests at a burial ceremony, leaving three persons dead, including an expectant mother.
The driver, who according to reports drove recklessly, had alighted from the vehicle in company of another occupant after the accident occurred to attend to those he ran into.
In their attempt to rescue the victims and move them to a nearby hospital, some youths attacked them.
The youths were said to have forced them back into the vehicle, locking it up, before setting the truck ablaze.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Chris Ezike, told newsmen the incident occurred last week, adding that investigations have commenced into it.
Ezike said, “The driver as we learnt, hailed from Weppa community, and the other occupant with the driver, is yet to be identified.
“Three persons, including a pregnant woman were crushed to death in the accident.
“A truck rammed into them in Osholo village, in the Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, during a burial ceremony.
“Some of our men were deployed to the scene to prevent further loss of lives and property by the youths who went out of control.
“We have arrested some suspects,” the CP confirmed.
