Residents of Ido Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Tuesday stormed the street, protesting the abduction of a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Akingbade from the community.
The priest, who doubles as a lawyer, was born on September 9, 1971 and was ordained as a priest on July 18, 1998. He is the parish priest in charge of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. He was at about 8pm whisked away by a three man gang from his residence.
DAILY POST gathered that Akingbade is also the Assistant Director of Justice, Development and Peace Initiative, JDPI, of the Diocese of Ekiti.
The youths who barricaded the highway that passes through the town with various inscriptions demanded the release of the clergyman, wondering why the town has now become an aboard for kidnappers as several people have recently been abducted from the community.
It was further learnt that commuters using the Ifaki-Ido-Otun Road were said to have either parked their vehicles or turned back with the intent of plying alternative routes.
While whisking him away, the gunmen were said to have demanded the sum of N20m.
The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, the Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, who confirmed the incident said an occupant of the priest’s resident was ordered at gun point to take them to the the victims room.
