Youths suspected to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday, during a protest attacked residents of Osi, in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
It was gathered that the irate youths were protesting against the victory of Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed of the All Progressive Congress, APC, who is the incumbent governor in Saturday’s gubernatorial and House of Assembly election.
While trying to express their dissatisfaction with the result of the elections, the angry protesters took to the palace of the Oba of Osi, Ibrahim Arowobeku II, vandalizing some of the cars within the area.
Trouble however started when the incumbent of the APC was said to have won in Ekiti Local Government Area, the home town of Ajibola, the candidate of the People Democratic Party.
A resident of the community said, “The protest started around 11am. After destroying two cars in the community, the protesters stormed the palace and destroyed the king’s car. They fled when the police intervened.”
The Kwara State Police Public relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the protest disclosed that eight persons suspected to have been involved in the incident have been arrested for breach of public peace.
The PPRO noted that investigation is currently ongoing and on completion, the suspects will be prosecuted.
He however said no life was lost while the protest lasted, adding that normalcy has been restored to the affected areas.
“I am aware that some hoodlums engaged in a violent protest in Osi, but I have not been briefed on the extent of damage in the area.
“Similarly, some suspected miscreants engaged a combined security team in gun duel, but no casualty was recorded. Eight suspects have been arrested and we are on the trail of other fleeing members.
“Weapons such as guns, knives were recovered from them. Meanwhile, normalcy has been restored to the two troubled areas by our men,” Okesanmi said.
